The standard annual blood panel ordered by most primary care physicians checks roughly 10–15 markers. A comprehensive functional panel checks 60–80. That gap is where most chronic issues hide undetected for years.
What the Standard Panel Misses
Fasting glucose tells you almost nothing about insulin resistance — you need fasting insulin alongside it. A standard lipid panel shows total cholesterol, LDL, and HDL, but doesn't break down LDL particle size, which is a far better predictor of cardiovascular risk.
Thyroid panels typically only include TSH. But TSH alone misses conversion issues — you need Free T3 and Free T4 to get the full picture. And unless you test thyroid antibodies, autoimmune thyroid disease can go undetected for a decade.
The Markers We Actually Care About
At M Health, a baseline functional panel includes: comprehensive metabolic panel, complete blood count, full thyroid panel with antibodies, fasting insulin and glucose, HbA1c, full lipid panel with particle sizing, inflammation markers (hs-CRP, homocysteine), hormone panel, vitamin D, B12, ferritin, and magnesium.
What Happens With Your Results
Unlike standard care where you get a "normal" call if nothing is flagged critical, our team reviews your results in context — looking at optimal ranges, not just reference ranges. Most people have multiple markers in the "normal" range that are quietly trending in the wrong direction.
